Abstract. The article is devoted to one of the most important problems of modern Russian education – its variability; it concerns both the history of the variable approach to teaching Literature and educational policy connected with implementing the variable programmes into school practice of the 2000s. The results of the study showed that the constant reformation of literary education, inappropriate decisions both at the Federal and regional levels destroy the principle of variability. Moreover, these reasons lead inevitably to the loss of the education quality.
