Abstract. Introduction. The article discusses the peculiarities of the youth reading culture at the
federal university. According to the authors’ point of view, the educational environment of the federal university should focus on creating pedagogical conditions, implementing of which will allow educating future specialists in various fields of activity as an individual concentrating on self-education and self-development by means of reading. Reader’s formation is developed during the students’ curricular and extracurricular activities with the help of technologies for stimulating students’ reading activity. Materials and methods. Methods of observation, questioning, design of the reading environment were used. Results of long-term socio-cultural project “Reading University” are presented. Research results. The statistical analysis of the first-year students’ reading motives reveals the social nature of the readers’ needs and interests, determining the place and value of reading in their lives. The characteristics of the fifth-year studentsreaders’ portrait indicate that they need reading for self-education, personal and professional development. Students at the beginning of their studies at university need pedagogical regulation of their reading activity. Undergraduates have a formed readiness for independent leisure reading; their reading experience can be used for work with school leavers and first-year students. Discussion and conclusion. A significant role in the system of guiding young people’s reading, improving the culture of students’ reading is provided by the educational environment of federal university. The aim of special technologies is to educate the reader «lifelong».
