Abstract. The paper presents a scientific-methodological approach to the concept of professional competence and methods for the development of professional competence in students of a higher educational institution. Nowadays, the changes related to the integration of federal educational standards with the professional standards determine the skills and abilities associated with the development of professional competences. The aim of the present paper is to build a model for developing the professional competence based on an analysis of scientific–methodological approaches to the development of professional competence in students learning at a higher educational institution. Materials and Methods. The research is based on three groups of methods: empirical research methods; combined empirical and theoretical research methods; and theoretical research methods. Results. The paper aims to develop a model of student’s professional competence based on the scientific-methodological approaches to shaping the professional competence of students learning in higher educational institution. Based on the research findings, the following conclusions have been drawn in this paper: the competence approach makes it possible to identify the types of competence; the indices of professional competences mirror the requirements of future experts; all professional competences correspond to the kind of professional activity the educational program is oriented to. The key competences of future experts are cognitive willingness, educational marketing literacy, communicative willingness, information proficiency, creativity, and professional mobility. The use of the Portfolio technology enhances the level of professional competence in students. Conclusion. The key issues of the research were dictated by the need of the modern society for the specialists with high-quality professional education that combines the fundamental education and practical knowledge and competencies. Therefore, the development of professional competence as one of the most significant future experts’ characteristics is the main objective in the higher educational system. Portfolio of a student is considered as an educational technology intended to establish the conditions and sequence of developing the professional competence as well as to assess the level of professional competence as a whole. Moreover, the Portfolio development process and a path of the professional competence formation will make it possible to assess the competence components in different educational stages. Thus, the process of the professional competence building can be diagnosed.
