Abstract. Introduction. The paper places emphasis on the importance of self-control in learning activity of students as a way to improve the effectiveness of their education process, form their activity and independence. The paper also demonstrates the importance of self-control for the pedagogy and psychology of higher school. The methods and the results of the research. Questionnaire helps reveal the difficulties facing the first-year students during their adaptation to new educational conditions of higher education institution. The practical solution to the issues. The importance of the course “The self-control in learning” for the successful learning in higher educational institution is substantiated. The scope of the course and competences to be formed during the course are presented. A case study demonstrating the application of portfolio as an innovative technology for education and formation of educational independence and control is presented. Conclusion. The course is universal and can be taken by the first-year students majoring in any field. It enables the students to become proficient in the competences envisaged for self-organization of brainwork and self-control of mental states in the process of education.
