Semantic Reading and Functional Comprehension of Text

Abstract.

Introduction. The paper deals with the problem of comprehension and understanding of a text as a tool of social interaction from the perspective of modern methodological paradigm. The objective of the study is to establish the functional patterns which underlie the method of working with different types of texts.

Materials and methods. The object of the research is definitions of the term “text” and key concepts in the field of text comprehension: “semantic reading”, “interpretation”, “texts”, as well as some examples of text interpretation based on the proposed methodology. The study is rests on the concepts of functional linguistics.

Results. An analysis of the empirical data indicates that the modern system of categories does not fully meet the practical requirements that are set in the process of teaching students. In this regard, we propose a functional method of working with text, which will allow us to form the necessary skills to comprehend and understand the literary works, the abilities to extract the necessary information from them, and others.

Conclusion. The key point of this study is the necessity of applying the functional approach to the educational practice. According to this approach, the work with texts will focus mostly on effective social interaction and the development of functional literacy skills. Such a direction of educational activity meets today’s global challenges.
