Abstract.
Introduction. The paper actualizes the problem of studying the specific features of reading in children with mild mental retardation. The goal of the paper is to present the results of an experimental study aimed at determining the possibility of using the Russian version of GOMs technology to diagnose the formation of understanding the read sentences in the students of this category.
Materials and Methods. The experiment involved 25 students with mild mental retardation at the age of 10-14 years. A group of theoretical scientific methods related to the analysis of empirical data was used. The data were obtained by both the conventional method, i.e. reading aloud, and the method of showing a correct option from the three offered to choose (a requirement of the GOMs technology is to use a non-verbal reaction as a response.
Results. The study indicates that understanding of read sentences by children with mild mental retardation can be diagnosed using the alternative methods based on GOMs technology: completion of the read sentence by showing a suitable word from the three proposed and matching the read sentence with the story picture from the three proposed. The validity of the use of alternative methods is confirmed. The method of showing a suitable word from the three offered is more sensitive to the unformed reading comprehension skills. The data obtained using this method coincide with the results of reading aloud at a 0.05 level of significance. The study confirms close and significant relationship between the data obtained by the method of showing a story picture and the results of reading aloud. The method is recommended for diagnosing in the early stages of the formation of reading skills.
Conclusion. The practical significance of the study lies in the confirmation of the validity of alternative methods of diagnosing the skill of reading sentences in the students with mental retardation. In the future, it is advisable to test the use of the methods in an interactive environment to monitor educational achievements.
