Abstract. Introduction. The history of women’s vocational education in Irkutsk has not yet received comprehensive coverage and is a relevant direction of scientific search. The purpose of the publication is to describe the existed practices of preparing young Irkutsk women for independent working life in the mid – 19th – early 20th centuries by teaching them various types of manual craft.
Materials and Methods. The study used documents of the Russian State Historical Archive and the State Archive of the Irkutsk Region, materials of the pre-revolutionary periodic press, official organizational and administrative documentation. Popular scientific and specific-historical methods of research were used to solve the tasks.
Results. It has been found that women’s educational institutions of all forms of ownership have successfully trained their female pupils in handicrafts, focusing them on professional work as an independent value, economic independence and social benefit. Combining the efforts of the educational administration of the region and the private educational initiative laid a solid foundation for the development of the system of women’s vocational education in Irkutsk.
Conclusion. The results illustrate the continuity of regional educational traditions and can be used to carry out a comprehensive study on the history of the formation and development of women’s vocational education in Irkutsk.
