Abstract. The phenomenon of leadership attracts the attention of philosophers, anthropologists, geneticists, physiologists, teachers, sociologists, psychologists, and political scientists. Pedagogy and psychology investigate the typology of leadership; personal qualities of the leader; specific sets of leadership qualities; technologies of the leader behavior; genesis, structure and functioning of consciousness of the leader. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that F. M Dostoevsky had showed that the leadership qualities of personality are formed in childhood and then in adolescence; and studied in what environment and under what conditions they are formed long before the psychological and pedagogical studies of the leadership phenomenon started. In the novel “The Brothers Karamazov”, Dostoevsky presents two types of a leader of a children’s team: the type of an authoritarian leader, in the character of Kolya Krasotkin, and the type of a charismatic spiritual leader, in the character of Ilyusha Snegirev. This is the first time, the Dostoevsky studies have shown how the writer investigated the mechanisms and strategies of establishing leadership, the innate and developed constellation of traits inherent in the leader. The paper can be used by the teacher to discuss the relationships in a team, to correct the ideas of teenagers about the reasons and ways of establishing leadership. It can also be used to explain how to distinguish true leaders from destructive leaders, whose actions are aimed not at organizing joint useful activities but rather at satisfying their own ambitions and claims to power.
