Abstract. Teenage orphans experience difficulties understanding themselves and their place in the world. The lack of knowledge about gender differences, a vague idea of teenage orphans about their future gender roles in the family, the absence of appropriate patterns for identification, and others upset the process of shaping gender identity. The paper aims to study the features of shaping the gender identity in adolescent girls left without parental care and to develop appropriate recommendations to form it. The study examines in detail the characteristics of gender identity in orphans. It reveals the features of gender identity in girls left without parental care and establishes the significance of a gender identity type for their social adaptation. The findings made it possible to develop practical recommendations on the formation of the gender identity type adequate to the biological sex of the orphans. The paper is intended for psychology specialists, employees of residential institutions, researchers dealing with gender identity issues, psychologists, and teachers involved in training and retraining psychology specialists and social pedagogues.
