Abstract. Introduction. The paper analyzes the approaches to the problem of shaping and developing gender identity in primary school age.
Materials and Methods. Two different samples of primary school students (302 in Irkutsk and 236 in Yaroslavl) show the place of gender identity in the system of identity as a whole and the features of its development.
Results. The place of gender identity as a component of identity as a whole is identified. The factors determining the development of gender identity in different periods of primary school age are analyzed. Its characteristic features are defined: boys with age differentiate the idea of themselves as a representative of a certain sex, however, its weight in the structure of identity is smaller than that for girls. At the same time, whereas in the early stages of the gender identity development, the main model for it is a parent, by the end of the period, the self-identification of the child prevails.
Conclusion. The study has revealed the predominant identifications of primary school students. The findings can be used to support the development and maturation of students.
