Abstract. Introduction. The article is devoted to an urgent problem: the perception of classical works by modern schoolchildren. The research was conducted on the material of L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” as part of the scientific qualification work (dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences) on the topic “Modern approaches to the study of L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” in literature classes in the 10th grade”. The purpose of the work is to present the results of an empirical study aimed at identifying the peculiarities of perception of L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” by the 10th grade students, their reader reviews and ratings, as well as determining the difficulties faced by schoolchildren when reading the work.
Materials and Methods. The methodological basis of the research was the works of outstanding methodologists-wordsmiths devoted to the organization of reading and studying L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” at school (V.V. Golubkova, T.G. Brazhe, etc.). Theoretical (analysis, synthesis) and empirical (ascertaining experiment, conversation, analysis of students’ works) methods were applied. The author has developed a questionnaire for 10th grade students.
The results. The data obtained in the course of the study allow us to draw conclusions about the peculiarities of the perception of L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” by modern tenth graders and identify the difficulties encountered by the students. This empirical material was taken into account when creating a system of lessons for studying L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace”.
Discussion and Conclusion. Based on the analysis of the results obtained during the survey, a model was developed for studying L.N. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” in literature classes in the 10th grade, and on the one hand, based on modern approaches (system-activity, cultural, axiological), on the other, taking into account the requests and needs of students.
