Abstract:

Introduction. The article addresses a topical issue related to the participation of primary school students in subject-based Olympiads. The article names and compares modern approaches to designing Olympiad tasks for younger pupils, examines various types of Russian language tasks, the principles of their development, and the possibilities of their use in lessons and extracurricular activities. The purpose of the study is to identify the principles of creating Olympiad tasks for primary school pupils and the ways of using advanced-level tasks in the educational process.

Materials and Methods. The scientific premise for writing this article was the publication prepared by the authors of the collections “Russian Language. Olympiad Tasks” for grades 1–2, 3, and 4 (published by Prosveshchenie Publishing). The methodological premise was the authors’ view on what advanced-level tasks for primary school pupils should be like. The authors are convinced that such tasks serve not only, or primarily, to differentiate pupils by their knowledge level, but rather to develop various skills in primary school that are necessary both for solving a particular linguistic task and for completing tasks of other types. The article analyzes a number of tasks presented in the published collections and demonstrates how the work with linguistic material can be organized. As material for the tasks for grades 1-2, literary texts that are part of children’s reading were used. The tasks for grades 3 and 4 are based on literary works included in the school curriculum of he “School of Russia” educational-methodical complex.

Results. The article analyzes different types of Olympiad tasks for primary school students. The authors show what foundation for further successful learning can be laid through the completion of these tasks.

Conclusion. The authors conclude that it is necessary to include advanced-level tasks in the system of curricular and extracurricular activities for primary school students. The main goal of such work is to provide the student with a tool for solving non-standard tasks.
