Abstract. The research aims to trace the way of nascency and formation of a cult of book as a unique phenomenon in the Russian culture during the 18th –20th centuries, and identify the reasons and factors that determined the high status of literature in Russian society, its role in the development of national identity; contributed to the fact that the book became not only and not so much a way of leisure for Russian citizens, but a cultural need.

Materials and methods. The study is based on the methods of historical and comparative analysis, generalization and synthesis. It also employs the method of actualization, which makes it possible to focus attention on the facts, events, phenomena, observations, ideas and conclusions that are supposed to be of scientific and pedagogical value for understanding the role of book, reading, and culture by the people of modern Russia and Literature as an academic discipline in the 21st century’s school education. A versatile approach to comprehending

the long-term historical establishment of a cult of books and reading in Russian culture of the 18th-20th centuries made it possible to objectify the results of the study.

Results of study. The multidimensional analysis of the emergence and formation of the “cult of book”, i.e., the cult of reading in Russian society, since the time of Ancient Russia, has covered a variety of aspects of understating this phenomenon, including philosophy; culture; literature as a part of culture and a type of art, as exponent of public and national identity; literature as an academic subject in the school system; psychology of “book reading”; book and its place in spiritual life of the Russian people in different epochs, including the current state of Russian society; journalism and book publishing, etc. Findings of the study indicate that the long-lasting book cult phenomenon in Russian culture is due to a consistent and verify ed system of creating a personality, upbringing a reader, familiarizing with reading, which embraces all social and moral institutes (family, school, culture, society, and the State).

Conclusion. The study has sharpened the issue of reading books, their place and role in modern digital society, which has become particularly relevant in the 21st century. It is obvious that only a systems approach to addressing this issue, which requires joint eff orts of all the institutes mentioned, can provide positive results if we do not want to lose the readers already in their early childhood.

Abstract. Introduction. Chemistry is one of the last academic subjects introduced into the educational process, which completes the natural science picture of the world in high school. Although chemistry is one of the least popular subjects chosen for the Unifi ed State Exam, it causes the greatest phobias among students. Since the quality of the subject assimilation in general determines the degree of success in the student’s cognitive activity and professional orientation, the publication aims to consider the efficiency of the educational chemistry content when used in the Telegram messenger.

Materials and methods. A pedagogical experiment was conducted using additional educational chemistry content on the Telegram channel “Chemistry – elementary”. The research relied on the competence-based and environmental approaches, which contributed to the individual success of the child in the simulated educational space.

Research results. The findings revealed that the pandemic and the transition to distance education technologies increased the need for didactic materials in chemistry. The use of additional educational chemistry content in Telegram messenger showed a positive effect on the quality of knowledge about chemistry. During the experiment, academic performance and cognitive activity in the subject rose.

Conclusion. The results obtained made it possible to substantiate a high level of activity in the subject, and overcoming chemophobia. The organization of additional educational content through the Telegram channel in an accessible game form (quiz questions, puzzles) can serve as a factor increasing the effectiveness of the educational resource.

Abstract. This paper presents the study of problem situations and typical difficulties faced by the lectors of modern higher education in carrying out research activities. The most important objective of the university administration is to create favorable conditions for undertaking this activity, provide it with the necessary resources, including organizational, pedagogical, psychological, methodological, financial, and other support for lectors, who are actively engaged in scientific activities and demonstrate high performance in it.

In the course of the study aimed at identifying typical difficulties encountered by university lectors in the process of research activities, more than 200 applications were recorded and differentiated by category of scientific and pedagogical workers: young scientists (teachers without a degree under the age of 30 (inclusive); teachers with a Ph.D. degree up to 35 years (inclusive); lectors who conduct initiative scientific work; and lectors who are executors and/ or managers of funded research projects. Cluster analysis allowed grouping the subjects of requests (typical problems) into several blocks:

– problems of determining the ways and prospects for the development of research activities;

– problems of lector competence;

– socio-psychological problems.

The practical significance of the research lies in obtaining reliable and necessary information to plan the professional and personal development of a lector, solve organizational, methodological, resource, and other problems of managing research activities. Further research will experimentally verify the models proposed to support research activity and evaluate their effectiveness.

Abstract. Introduction. The most crucial factor in the development of a state is the status and performance of the education system. The social and economic stability of a state and its prestige in the international arena depend on how the education system meets the challenges of the modern world. The paper briefly outlines the development of universities in the Irkutsk region in the 21st century and analyzes the regional specifics of the implementation of state programs for enhancing higher education.

Methods and materials. The accomplishment of the goal involved the investigation of sources represented by the normative legal acts regulating the education sector; statistical data yearbooks for recent years; and secondary analysis of sociological research data. Theoretical understanding of the topic relies on the studies presented in the monographs, dissertations, and scientific papers focusing on the development of federal and regional educational policy.

Results of the research. The study has revealed some problems of the effective functioning of higher education in the region and outlined the proposals put forward to optimize this process.

Conclusion. Higher education in the Irkutsk region has some structural problems that impede the development of regional higher education. Federal programs, being a tool designed to transform the education system, are unable to change this situation and do not have a significant impact on the quality of higher education at the present stage.
